Dolbadarn Castle - An impressive Welsh mountain fortress

Dolbadarn Castle, located near Caernarfon, Wales, is an impressive castle ruin with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The castle sits on a hill above the picturesque Llyn Padarn Lake, offering spectacular views of the Snowdonia mountain landscape. It is considered a significant symbol of Welsh resistance against English conquest and is closely associated with the rule of Welsh princes.

Historical Background
Dolbadarn Castle was built in the first half of the 13th century by Llywelyn the Great, one of the most powerful princes of Gwynedd. The castle served as a strategic fortress to control the Llanberis Valley and secure Welsh rule in Northwest Wales. Unlike the later stone fortresses built by the English, Dolbadarn was constructed in a typical Welsh castle style characterized by round towers and simple but effective defense structures.

The castle played a central role in the power struggles between Welsh princes and the English crown. One of the most famous historical incidents was the imprisonment of Owain ap Gruffudd, the brother of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, who was incarcerated here for many years.

After Wales was conquered by Edward I of England in the late 13th century, Dolbadarn Castle lost its strategic significance. Many of its building materials were used for the construction of the nearby, much larger Caernarfon Castle, which became part of the imposing English castle ring in Wales.

Architecture and Construction
Although Dolbadarn Castle is now a ruin, the remains are still impressive and showcase typical Welsh fortress architecture. The most striking feature of the castle is the massive round tower, approximately 15 meters high, representing one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in Wales. This tower served as a residential and defensive tower and was likely the most important part of the complex.

Other remains of the castle include:
- The foundations of outer buildings, which once housed storage rooms, living quarters, and a chapel.
- The curtain wall that enclosed the site and provided natural protection on the rocky hill.
- Entrances and staircases, some of which are still preserved, showing how the castle inhabitants moved through the site.

The strategic location of the castle on a hill made it a natural fortress from which attacks from the valley or the lake could be detected early.

Significance and Cultural Heritage
Dolbadarn Castle not only has a military past but is also a significant symbol of Welsh resistance against English rule. It represents the last flowering of independent Welsh principalities before the final conquest by England.

In the 19th century, the castle was rediscovered by artists and poets and portrayed as a romantic ruin. Famous painters like J.M.W. Turner immortalized the castle ruin in their works, contributing to the fame of Dolbadarn Castle as a picturesque attraction.

Today, the ruin is preserved as an important protected landmark and attracts many visitors who want to learn more about the medieval history of Wales.

The Surroundings of Dolbadarn Castle
In addition to its historical significance, Dolbadarn Castle offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The castle overlooks Llyn Padarn Lake and provides spectacular views of the Snowdonia mountain range, including the highest peak Yr Wyddfa.

Near the castle, there are numerous hiking trails winding through the fascinating landscape of Snowdonia National Park. A popular choice is combining a visit to the castle with a hike to the nearby Llanberis Pass or a walk along the shores of Llyn Padarn.

Other nearby attractions include:
- The National Slate Museum, showcasing the history of slate mining in the region.
- The Llanberis Lake Railway, a historic narrow-gauge railway along the lake.
- Caernarfon Castle, one of Edward I's most impressive castles.

Conclusion
Dolbadarn Castle is not only an impressive ruin but also a symbol of medieval Wales and resistance against English conquest. The castle offers a deep historical insight into the rule of Welsh princes and provides a spectacular view of the Snowdonia landscape. Its combination of history, architecture, and nature makes it one of the most fascinating castle ruins in Wales.

TLDR: This is a great place to visit. It’s free (bonus) and characterful, though it’s not a trip which will take you long. The castle is a short woodland walk off of the road near Llyn Padarn. There’s some nice photography opportunities on the way up, such as the rocky river and the castle itself with the gorgeous backdrop. There’s plenty of parking at the bottom of the castle - pay and display by the hour. It’s definitely worth it if you don’t mind a walk as you can walk into the town nearby and enjoy the shops and coffee etc. I guess it’s worth it if you like seeing castles too, though I personally wouldn’t visit this area just for this castle as it’s smaller than others in North Wales, and a fairly quick visit. There’s steps to the top of the castle up a spiral staircase which is one of the narrowest and tightest I’ve experienced in any building! Please don’t attempt it if you’re unsure on your feet. Gorgeous scenery surrounds the place. There’s a nice woodland walk nearby, but this is pretty much all there is here. It’s a lovely stop as part of a trip to Dinorwig or the town nearby. If this was helpful, give it a like so that others see it 🙂

What a magnificent piece of history that still stands in the shadow of Dinorwic quarry. The ruins of this castle are easily found by a short 5 minute walk from the carpark across the road. It's a certainly worth it. If your brave enough, there's a claustrophobic staircase leading to the top of the tower, however the very top is gated off.

As a castle not much there, nice to see a ruin and one big tower, was gutted when arriving there to realise you couldn’t climb it was hoping to get a better view, however the view you can see is absolutely amazing ! just to sit and look all around you is special. Worth the trek, but steep and slidey in the mud so becareful.

This free site is well worth a visit to see the castle itself, and to take in the views. I think there are three routes up to the site, to suit various requirements. Sturdy shoes are a must.

The 'castle' is just an empty tower, but the views from here are Amazing !! The small hike from the caste car park is also really calm and nice.

Un posto davvero bello. Purtroppo l'interno da visitare è davvero piccolo e si riduce a tre rampe di scale. Gratuito, si raggiunge in soli 10 min dai parcheggi vicini.

Once a fortress defending the heart of Snowdonia and the entrance to the Nant Peris Valley. A magical path to the castle in the scenery of moss trees and a mountain stream. From the top of the tower there is a view of the lakes and the valley and it looks beautiful. And imagine that they saw the same views here in the 13th century when they were building the castle, and going back even further, a fortress already existed here in the 6th century. Sit back and admire.
